The state announced this week that three of the four medical cannabis cultivators have gained approval to also serve the pending recreational market, a crucial step in the opening of Connecticut’s adult-use industry.

The state Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) said three medical cannabis growers and seven medical dispensaries have successfully converted their license to hybrid operations, which allows them to serve the medical and adult-use markets. Still, as stipulated in last year’s legalization law, adult-use marijuana sales can’t begin until there is at least 250,000 square feet of growing and manufacturing space in the state.

DCP officials said this threshold will be met when the fourth existing medical cultivator converts its facility. Adult-use sales are still expected to begin around the end of the year or early 2023.

The growers now authorized for hybrid operations include:

  • Advanced Grow Labs LLC, owned by Chicago-based Green Thumb Industries.
  • Connecticut Pharmaceutical Solutions LLC, owned by Chicago-based Verano Holdings Corp.
  • Curaleaf LLC, owned by Massachusetts-based multistate operator Curaleaf.

Theraplant, the state’s fourth grower with a facility in Watertown, has not yet completed the steps to convert to hybrid. The company was bought by New York-based Greenrose Holding Co. in March 2021. DCP received the company’s conversion application earlier this month and is reviewing it currently, according to the state.

The dispensaries now authorized for hybrid sales include:

  • Affinity in New Haven
  • Bluepoint Wellness of Connecticut in Branford
  • C3 Torrington, doing business as Still River Wellness
  • Fine Fettle Dispensary Newington
  • Fine Fettle Dispensary Stamford
  • Fine Fettle Dispensary Willimantic
  • Willow Brook Wellness in Meriden

The DCP said it has issued a total of 42 provisional cannabis licenses so far for various business types.
