150 CT workers to lose jobs amid Lord & Taylor closures

The parent company of Lord & Taylor, Le Tote Inc., has notified the state that it will be laying off 150 employees in early December due to the planned closure of its four Connecticut stores.

Le Tote Inc. filed four separate Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notices with the state Department of Labor last week.

Ed Kremer, chief restructuring officer with Le Tote, cited the COVID-19 pandemic and other adverse business conditions as factors in the decision, according to the notices, which are all dated Oct. 1.

Lord & Taylor is America’s oldest department store with origins dating back to 1826 in New York. A staple of many malls for decades, it sells clothing, accessories, beauty products and home goods. It filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in August and announced its plans to close Connecticut stores and others around the country. The company first announced “going out of business” sales at the impacted locations this summer.

Le Tote Inc. includes Lord & Taylor and Le Tote, a venture-backed fashion rental subscription service founded in 2012 in San Francisco. Le Tote acquired Lord & Taylor in 2019.

The layoffs are happening at closing stores at:

  • 110 High Ridge Road, Stamford
  • 5065 Main Street, Trumbull (Westfield Trumbull Mall) 
  • 7 Backus Ave., Danbury (Danbury Fair Mall)
  • 400 West Farms Mall, Farmington (Westfarms Mall)

The impacted Connecticut employees include 58 in Stamford, 40 in Trumbull, 28 in Danbury and 24 in Farmington. The separations are slated to begin on Dec. 1, or within two weeks following that date.
