200 students to attend pro-manufacturing event

State and manufacturing officials will educate more than 200 middle school students Wednesday on the opportunities in manufacturing.

The seventh annual program, billed as “Connecticut Dream It. Do It. Manufacturing Mania!,” is funded by the Department of Economic and Community Development’s (DECD) manufacturing Innovation Fund  in an effort to grow the state’s next generation of manufacturers. The event is also licensed and led by the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT).

More than 200 students from New Britain, Bristol, Wallingford, Waterbury, Litchfield, Derby, Canterbury, Danbury and Washington are expected to attend the event at Heritage Hotel and Conference Center in Southbury.

Students will learn about new career opportunities in manufacturing through workshops, competitions, and exhibits and displays from manufacturers and education institutions.

Since 2012, the annual event has introduced almost 2,500 middle and high school students and teachers to the educational and career pathways in manufacturing, according to Sue Palisano, director of education and workforce development for CCAT.

Capital Workforce Partners, Connecticut’s largest workforce development board, has projected there will be more than 26,200 manufacturing job openings annually between 2014 to 2024.
