The Central Connecticut Celtic Cultural Committee has canceled its annual St. Patrick's Day parade three months ahead of the holiday due to COVID-19.

Cancelation of the 2021 parade marks the second consecutive year the committee had to ax parade plans due to the pandemic.

“This decision was not made lightly and we have everyone’s health and well-being at the forefront of our decision,” parade Chairwoman Elizabeth Saunders said.

However, the committee is considering a "Halfway to St. Patrick's Day" event in the fall of 2021 -- if health conditions allow -- in anticipation of its 50th Annual Greater Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2022.

In a statement, Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin said canceling the parade is the right move for public health, but pointed out that restaurants and Hartford businesses that are already suffering will be hit yet again by the loss of parade crowds that patronize their establishments.

“This is the right and responsible decision, but it’s also one more blow to downtown restaurants and bars that have been so hard hit," Bronin said. "Those restaurants urgently need relief, whether from the federal government or the state – so they can be around when we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2022."
