Aetna Foundation pledges $500K to Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford

The philanthropic arm of Hartford health insurer Aetna on Thursday announced it will donate $500,000 to the Boys & Girls Club (BGHH) of Hartford to promote healthy living.

Funding from the Aetna Foundation, an independent charitable affiliate of Rhode Island-based CVS Health Corp., will be awarded to BGHH over the next five years to ramp-up programs aimed at preventing underage substance abuse of alcohol, tobacco and vaping products and improving the overall health of youth.

The foundation says it’s also pledged $500,000 in funding for the Boys & Girls Club of Providence for the same cause.

Most of the funding will support national prevention program “Positive Action,” which was created by prevention specialists and Boys & Girls Clubs across the U.S. to increase youth access to activities developed to build decision-making skills that help young people learn how to avoid and resist alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

CVS, which acquired Aetna for $69 billion last November, is in year four of its five-year, $50 million “Be The First” initiative focused on preventing youth tobacco use. Several smoking prevention and education programs have been developed out of the multiyear campaign.

Earlier this year, CVS also announced it pledged $100 million toward its Building Healthier Communities initiative to support community health and wellness programs.
