Amazon launches second Wallingford facility

E-commerce giant Amazon is launching its second operation in Wallingford this week, adding another 84,000 square feet to its growing footprint in Connecticut, company officials announced Tuesday.

The retailer said the delivery station at 425 South Cherry Street will house more than 150 full- and part-time workers and "hundreds" of drivers for Amazon's delivery service partners and Amazon Flex drivers. The company debuted its first Wallingford facility in a 173,000-square-foot commercial building at 29 Research Parkway in late 2015.

Amazon's delivery stations, equipped with smaller vans, handle the "last mile" of the order process in an effort to speed up deliveries, officials say. Packages are shipped to delivery stations from nearby Amazon fulfillment and sortation centers, loaded into delivery vehicles and delivered to customers.

The company's second Wallingford facility opened just weeks after it unveiled a new 403,000-square-foot, large-item fulfillment center in Cromwell. 

Amazon also currently occupies more than 3 million square feet in Windsor, North Haven, Cromwell, Stratford, Wallingford, Bristol, Enfield, Trumbull, Orange and at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks. It also plans to occupy another 1-plus million square feet at facilities in Windsor and Danbury in the next year.

Over the last decade, Amazon says it's created more than 8,500 full- and part-time jobs and invested more than $2.1 billion in Connecticut. It says those investments contributed an additional $1.7 billion to the state's economy and helped create another 4,400 indirect jobs.
