American Airlines plans month-long Tweed service suspension

American Airlines says it will suspend service to 15 airports for a month this fall, including Tweed-New Haven.

In its decision, the airline cited low demand and the expiration of air service requirements associated with the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

American Airlines said it’s continuing to evaluate its network and that additional schedule changes may be coming.

The Tweed service suspension will start Oct. 7, and for now, the plan is for it to only last through Nov. 3.

The airline anticipates releasing its October schedule on Aug. 29, and its updated November schedule by late September.

American Airlines is Tweed’s sole commercial carrier, and Tweed has been advertising that passengers can fly from Tweed to Philadelphia International Airport, then to any destination in the world served by American.

Tweed-New Haven Executive Director Sean Scanlon issued the following statement Thursday morning in response to the decision: “In this difficult and unprecedented time, airlines and airports across the country are facing enormous challenges. We understand that American Airlines must suspend service for a month at Tweed-New Haven and other airports across the country, as they regroup in response to the global pandemic.”

“The airport and the New Haven community greatly value our long standing relationship with American Airlines and look forward to welcoming them back later in the fall,” Scanlon said.

Tweed has been pursuing the expansion of its runway, with the hope of attracting more commercial carriers.

"American is our sole commercial carrier at this point," Scanlon said via email Thursday. "What this means is that American is taking a brief pause here for the month of October given the incredible financial duress they and the entire industry are in, but we fully expect them to resume service this fall."

Other than Tweed, the other affected airports are in Del Rio, Texas; Dubuque, Iowa; Florence, S.C.; Greenville, N.C.; Huntington, W.Va.; Joplin, Mo.; Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, Mich.; Lake Charles, La.; New Windsor, N.Y.; Roswell, N.M.; Sioux City, Iowa; Springfield, Ill.; Stillwater, Okla; and Williamsport, Pa.
