American School for the Deaf launches online learning platform

The American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, the oldest school of its kind in the country, is launching an online education platform intended to serve deaf and hard of hearing students.

School officials said the new “Online Academy” will allow students from around the world to access more varied course offerings, interact with new peers and explore language learning opportunities. Some students will use the Online Academy as their primary source of education, they added, while for others the platform will serve as a supplement to their current coursework.

“For over two centuries, the American School for the Deaf has pioneered innovative solutions to meet the challenges facing deaf and hard of hearing students,” said Jeffrey S. Bravin, the school’s executive director. “This tradition continues with the launch of the Online Academy, which will connect deaf and hard of hearing students everywhere with ASD’s team of world-class educators and curriculum.”

According to the school’s website, the online platform is intended for students ages 12 to 16. It will cover core academic subject areas, specifically English, math, science and social studies.

School officials expect to gradually add more capabilities to the Online Academy over time, including tutoring, extracurricular activities, support services and other offerings.
