Regional supermarket chain Big Y on Monday announced plans to relocate its store at 403 Main St. in Ansonia to Derby Plaza, 656 New Haven Ave., some three miles away. Construction is currently under way at this new “state-of-the art” market, slated to open on a yet-to-be-announced date this fall.

Big Y said the new Derby store includes features that respond to evolving consumer tastes. These include expanded ready-to-eat meal offerings, a greater variety of specialty products including organic and gluten-free offerings, a broader array of locally sourced fruits and vegetables as well as expanded local products throughout the supermarket.

The relocation will result in no net job losses, the supermarket chain said. All current Ansonia employees will be offered another position either at the new store or at a nearby Big Y where there are openings. Those not interested in transferring to another location will be offered a completion bonus along with Big Y’s employee-assistance program.

In anticipation of staffing the new location, Big Y says it will open a hiring site as the Derby store will need about an additional 140 employees. More specific hiring-site information will be made available in September, the company said.

One of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England with more than 11,000 employees, Big Y Foods Inc. operates 82 locations throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, including 70 supermarkets, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines & Liquors and 10 Big Y Express gas and convenience locations. Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D'Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Mass., where two roads converged to form a ‘Y.’
