A New York-based pizza chain plans to open a downtown Hartford location this winter in the former site of McKinnon’s Irish Pub.
Artichoke Basille’s Pizza, which opened its first Connecticut franchise in Newington in February, will move into the 114 Asylum St. ground floor space, which is adjacent to the XL Center, the company said in a statement.
“We believe in the future of Hartford and see its immense potential, especially with all the new developments planned for Downtown,” said Matt Rusconi, Connecticut franchisee for Artichoke Basille’s Pizza. “We’ll be anxiously awaiting the day we can officially open doors and bring a slice of NYC to this city!”
Artichoke Basille’s is known for its casual pizza concept, and serves thick crust pizza slices and whole pies, according to the company. It currently operates 14 locations, in addition to franchised locations on the way in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Northern California.
McKinnon’s closed its doors in spring 2018, after 16 years at that location. The bar’s owner Matthew Corey said at the time 2,150-square-foot Asylum Street site was too small, and stifled growth opportunities for the business.
