Fast-food chain McDonald’s, one of the nation’s largest employers, says its independent franchisees in Connecticut expect to hire about 2,440 employees for the busy summer season.

That will include 90 hires in Greater Hartford during the three-month period, the company said.

The Chicago-based fast-food giant said it offers eligible employees access to college tuition assistance and career advising services and other opportunities to learn English as a second language. The company has provided more than $541,000 in tuition assistance to 245 workers in Connecticut, it says.

McDonald’s, which says it employs about 7,952 full- and part-time workers in Connecticut across 142 locations, has been at the center of the national and local debates about the minimum wage.

In March, the company sent a letter to the National Restaurant Association saying it would no longer lobby against minimum wage hikes proposed at the local, state or federal levels. McDonald’s had long been targeted by wage-increase advocates to raise the company’s minimum hourly wage to $15. However, the company has said it doesn’t set wages at it franchises.

In Connecticut, a bill that would raise the state’s minimum wage from $10.10 to $15 by 2023 passed the House of Representatives last week by a vote of 85-59.

A company spokeswoman for McDonald’s declined to comment on the number of McDonald’s employees in Connecticut currently earning minimum wage.
