On Sunday AT&T announced that it would waive domestic wireless voice and data overage fees for customers nationwide.
The fees will be waived retroactive to March 13, according to an announcement released by John Emra, president of AT&T Connecticut.
“We will not terminate the service of any wireless, home phone or broadband residential or small-business customer because of their inability to pay their bill due to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic,” Emra said.
The COVID-19 crisis has caused communications traffic to skyrocket in Connecticut and across the globe. On Sunday the volume of wi-fi calls was up 88 percent compared to a normal Sunday, the company said.
To accommodate the traffic increase AT&T said it had added portable cell sites for its FirstNet emergency-responder network in Connecticut as well as New York, New Jersey, Indiana and California. “Public safety remains a top priority and FirstNet liaisons at AT&T are currently embedded with state and federal emergency operations centers,” said Emra.
As a result of the pandemic shutdown, video streaming traffic has soared to previously unimagined volumes. Last Friday and Saturday (March 20-21) AT&T said its Netflix traffic set all-time records for numbers of users.
The company said customers could contact the company at 800-288-2020 for AT&T broadband, residential wireless or small business services and 611 from AT&T wireless devices.
