The Avangrid Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Orange-based energy utility Avangrid, has allocated $1 million in grants to nonprofit partners and community relief funds, in an effort to aid coronavirus recovery nationwide.

Avangrid also is committing an additional $500,000 in corporate funds to support communities impacted by the virus.

These latest grants bring the total Covid-19 related giving for Avangrid to $2.5 million, according to the company.

James P. Torgerson, president of the Avangrid Foundation and CEO of Avangrid Inc., said the philanthropic efforts are designed to help the most vulnerable and support those on the front lines of COVID-19 response.

Avangrid is the parent company of Connecticut Natural Gas, Southern Connecticut Gas and United Illuminating.

In Connecticut, grant recipients include the Connecticut United Ways COVID-19 Response Fund, a joint effort of all the state United Way chapters, and the 4-CT Statewide COVID-19 Relief Fund, a donor-advised fund of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

The grant money has gone to organizations in other states and to nationwide organizations, such as Feeding America, the American Red Cross, Americares and Meals on Wheels America, according to the company.

All Avangrid companies have suspended customer shut-offs due to nonpayment during the crisis, and they have donated 31,000 protective masks to help protect health-care workers.
