Orange-based Avangrid recently made a deal to contribute $510,000 to Yale University to support research projects that focus on advancing the transition to clean energy.

The energy company will provide Yale with $170,000 per year over the course of three years, according to the utility.

The collaboration between Yale and Avangrid began in 2019. It supports research into solar energy, battery storage, electric vehicles, energy policy and other topics related to growing the clean energy industry.

Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra said the company is convinced innovation is key to developing solutions for clean energy.

“Strong collaborations with academic institutions, like the one we have with Yale, allow different sectors to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaborate to build a cleaner, more sustainable world for generations to come,” said Azagra.

With the collaboration, researchers are able to work on projects that could potentially be implemented. An example of a project is a data analysis on Avangrid’s Connecticut customers to study if solar power should be used in the company’s circuits.

“We will support a range of ongoing sustainability and energy-related studies and engage student leaders at Yale who are committed to addressing systemic environmental challenges. Our endeavors stand to accelerate the development and implementation of clean energy solutions,” said Peter Salovey, president of Yale University.
