Avelo Airlines adds Tweed flights, sets up hub in Orlando

A year after launching its very first flight, Avelo Airlines announced Thursday that it would add a flight to Wilmington, N.C., from Tweed New Haven Airport and establish a second East Coast hub in Orlando, Fla.

The startup airline, which began service from Burbank, Calif., in April 2021, said it would also boost service to Orlando from Tweed during the summer and start adding branches to its East Coast flight map.

Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said, “It’s summer and everyone loves a Florida getaway, so adding two and three flights a day to Orlando from Tweed is sure to be a crowd pleaser.”

Earlier this week, Avelo announced via social media that it would start flying from Orlando to Charleston, S.C., as of June 30, and would make the Florida city its second East Coast hub. Additional flights from Orlando to Washington, D.C., and Wilmington, N.C., will start this summer.

Avelo said it expects to fly at least 10 nonstop destinations from Orlando International Airport by the end of 2022, including Tweed. More than 150 people will be hired to staff the airline’s Orlando operations.

“I’m looking forward to the positive economic and community impact Avelo will make in Orlando and across Florida as we increase our investment here in the years ahead,” Levy said

In March, Avelo announced it would add Chicago and Washington, D.C., flights to its schedule from Tweed starting in May. More than 100,000 passengers have flown to and from New Haven since Avelo started service at Tweed on Nov. 3, compared to 42,000 in all of 2019.
