Avelo Airlines to hire 100 at Tweed New Haven Airport

Ahead of a new slate of flights to Florida planned to start in November, Avelo Airlines announced it would start hiring 100 people for its New Haven operations at Tweed Airport.

The airline said it would start accepting applications starting this week for jobs including pilots, flight attendants, airport customer service, operations-related roles and manager and supervisor positions.

As part of the hiring effort, Avelo and Tweed will team with New Haven Works and Workforce Alliance to host a career fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the airport.

“This is your chance to help us build a different, better and caring airline devoted to connecting people to the experiences, places and people they value most,” Avelo Head of People Jim Lynde said.

Avelo announced earlier this month that it would begin service on Nov. 3 to Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando and Tampa Bay at the promotional price of $59 each way.

Airport and airline officials said Avelo’s new flights and Tweed’s role as Avelo’s East Coast hub would eventually create 1,000 jobs.

“The work we’re doing at [Tweed] is already resulting in much-desired new flights and expanded service, but the truth is it’s about even more than that – it’s about jobs and economic development,” said Sean Scanlon, Director of the Tweed Airport Authority.

L.A.-based Avelo has promised to spend $1.2 million to retrofit Tweed as part of an overall $100 million expansion plan to allow for bigger planes and longer runways. The plan is still under consideration by lawmakers in both New Haven and East Haven, which share the airport.

New Haven's  City Plan Commission voted Wednesday night to approve an initial $5 million in renovations toward the expansion. Approved were site plan revisions and a special permit to expand parking related to renovations to the airport’s West Terminal.

Tweed Executive Director Sean Scanlon said, “When we first announced this project in May, we made clear that there were many steps necessary to make it a reality. Tonight was one of those critical steps, and I want to thank the City Plan Commission for their thoughtful comments and support."

Some residents of surrounding neighborhoods oppose the expansion due to noise, traffic, environmental and other concerns.
