Avelo launches game giveaway as Tweed flights top 90 so far

It could be the ultimate gift for the local “airline nerd” in your life: A gaming system emblazoned with the logo of Avelo Airlines’ New Haven-based “Spirit of the Havens” 737.

Avelo is giving away the one-of-a-kind PS5 system through a sweepstakes running through Dec. 5. To enter, follow AveloAir on Instagram.

Avelo CEO Andrew Levy said, “The PS5 is the hottest holiday present on the planet and Avelo is excited to make this dream gift a reality for one very lucky Connecticut gamer.”

The plane making the airline’s first flight to Florida on Nov. 3 was christened “Spirit of the Havens” after its home base Tweed New Haven Airport, located in both New Haven and East Haven.

The game system giveaway is the latest in a series of promotions by the startup airline, which has made New Haven its East Coast hub.

In addition to $49 introductory fares, Avelo has offered 48-hour and 72-hour sales in recent weeks with further discounts that were heavily promoted via email and social media. The airline also debuted a “highlight reel” film about its first flight from New Haven on its Facebook page.

Avelo took the occasion of the game system giveaway announcement on Monday to offer updates on its New Haven operations.

More than 90 Avelo flights have taken off or landed at Tweed since the Nov. 3 kickoff, Avelo said in a statement. “We are very pleased with how full the flights have been,” the company said. “Booking remains very strong heading into the holidays. We are expecting very full flights in the days and weeks ahead.”

The airline has hired more than 85 people at Tweed (HVN) as flight attendants, pilots, airport customer service representatives, operations-related roles, managers and supervisors. More than 100 people will be working at Avelo and Tweed by the end of the year, the airline said.

Avelo launched service to Florida’s West Coast on Nov. 11 with a nonstop to Fort Myers and additional service to Palm Beach starting on Dec. 16.

Flights to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport from Tweed are scheduled to start on Jan. 13, for a total of six Florida destinations nonstop from New Haven for the winter high season.
