Ban on utility shut-offs extended through July

The state’s public utilities regulator has again extended a moratorium on utility service shut-offs for businesses and other non-residential rate payers in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) on Thursday said the moratorium, which was set to expire July 1, will now be in effect until Aug. 1, barring any future extensions.

It’s the third one-month extension of the moratorium, which has been in effect since mid-March, and PURA’s justification was again that businesses are still in the process of fully reopening.

Residential ratepayers are protected from shut-offs by a separate PURA order, which will be in effect until Gov. Ned Lamont declares an end to the state’s public health emergency at a future date.
