Bristol housing added for homeless military vets

Hartford nonprofit Chrysalis Center Inc. says it’s restored a long vacant shelter in Bristol to house homeless military veterans.

Nine formerly homeless veterans will move into the 9,152-square-foot development known as “The Elms” in the coming weeks, Chrysalis announced Thursday.

The Connecticut Department of Housing is covering the costs for the $2.7 million project, which was led by the Chrysalis Center Real Estate Corp., the holding corporation for Chrysalis.

Located at the former St. Vincent DePaul Transitional Shelter on West Street, the three-story building features nine apartment units, meeting space, community and fitness rooms and a laundry facility.

The Bristol Housing Authority has committed nine housing assistant payment vouchers for the project in order for the units to remain affordable for veterans. Two of the occupants moving in next month are Bristol natives.

Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu in a statement said she supported the building’s new use as a supportive housing development for veterans.

Chrysalis, which provides social services across Connecticut, operates 10 residential buildings in Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, the Rockville section of Vernon and Stafford.
