Capital Workforce Partners scores $5.8M for job training

Connecticut’s workforce development board in north central Connecticut has been awarded a $5.8 million federal grant to upskill workers for jobs in growing industries.

Capital Workforce Partners (CWP) will receive part of the $109.5 million Trade and Economic Transition Dislocated Worker Grants (DWGs), which is geared for state, nonprofit and tribal groups that collaborate with community and workforce development boards to train individuals for high-growth employment sectors.

Under the grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, CWP will launch skills instruction and career services for workers seeking reemployment opportunities due to a shift in workforce needs or economic changes.

The dislocated workers grant supports “economic transition,” meaning a workforce trend beyond the purview of an employer, causing a significant loss of workers in an industry or job category.

A total of 21 states, nonprofits and tribes will receive a cut of the federal dollars.

In the upper northeast, the New York Department of Labor has been awarded $8 million and the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training will receive over $6 million.
