Carcinogen prompts Shelton manufacturer to recall sunscreen

Shelton-based manufacturer Edgewell Personal Care Co. has issued a nationwide recall of three batches of its Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30.

The three batches have the following lot codes: 20016AF, 20084BF and 21139AF. Consumers can find the codes on the bottom of the sunscreen’s aerosol cans.

All products which don’t have these three codes are not part of the recall, and consumers can continue to use them safely, Edgewell indicated in an announcement.

According to the company, it decided to do the voluntary recall after an internal review found trace levels of benzene in some samples of the product.

Benzene is a known carcinogen, according to the American Cancer Society. In announcing the recall, Edgewell noted that exposure can result in cancers such as leukemia.

Benzene is not in the sunscreen itself, but from the propellant that sprays the product out of its can, the company indicated.

Edgewell said that it has not received any notice of adverse events associated with the recalled product, which was distributed nationwide via various retailers and online.

All retailers who carry it have been notified to remove the product from their shelves.

Consumers who purchased the product are eligible for a refund. For more information on obtaining a refund, call 1-888-686-3988 or visit www.bananaboat.com.

Anyone who experiences an adverse reaction can notify the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program by calling 1- 800-332-1088 or filling out a form at fda.gov.
