The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted many caterers, as large events have been postponed or cancelled.
As many longstanding businesses know, the key to long-term survival is learning to adapt.
Abel Caterers of Woodbridge is doing just that, pivoting from its primary event-catering focus to bringing its culinary offerings to customers via a food truck.
The business recently purchased the truck and will be able to provide meals on the road, whether it is a small gathering, outdoor party or parking lot.
Business owner Meredith Abel-Berei has named the new truck “Neil’s Wheels” after her late father, Neil Abel, who passed away about a decade ago. Even after the pandemic subsides, the business will keep the food truck going.
“We had been focused on weddings and conferences for so many years, but a food truck was always part of the larger plan,” Abel-Berei said.
She hopes the food truck portion of the business will help bring people back together, whether it is for a birthday party or reunion.
The food truck will be used to serve meals around Greater New Haven starting this month, and it is available for community gatherings, festivals and private events.
Abel-Berei plans to serve up offerings such as New Haven thin crust pizza, falafel and Mediterranean fare, fried chicken, or New York style deli food. Neil’s Wheels can customize its menu.
According to Abel-Berei, Abel Caterers has been in business for nearly 50 years.
Like most businesses, the catering company has struggled during the crisis. Even so, Abel-Berei said it has a long tradition of giving to the community, including most recently by donating meals to frontline workers and masks to volunteers.
