Local businesspeople are needed to help community nonprofits reach their potential, and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce is seeking recruits for nonprofit boards at a first-ever event planned for Wednesday.

Dozens of agencies are expected at the chamber’s Nonprofit Board Recruitment Fair, set to take place from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday at Albertus Magnus College’s Hubert Campus Center at 700 Prospect St. in New Haven.

Chamber President and CEO Garrett Sheehan said, “This would be a great way to be able to find that opportunity to work in volunteering or getting to know more about some of the nonprofits.”

The event has been in the works for about a year, sparked by a suggestion from the Chamber's Nonprofit Resource Council, Sheehan said.

Among the nonprofits scheduled to appear at the event are the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, Ronald McDonald House Charities, The New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the New Haven Pride Center and the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen.

“It really showcases the nonprofit community that we have here,” Sheehan said of the event.

“Board service is a critical component of building stronger communities and addressing issues in the region, and we hope that this event will further support the important work nonprofits do,” Sheehan said.
