Construction has begun on the upscale, six-story, 130-room Cambria Hotel in New Haven.
The hotel, which is being built at 20 Dwight St., is expected to open for guests next summer.
Cambria is a brand franchised by Choice Hotels International Inc.
Janis Cannon, senior vice president, upscale brands for Choice Hotels, said in an announcement Friday the groundbreaking is part of an ongoing expansion for the brand, which recently opened new hotels in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Florida; Rock Hill, South Carolina; and Washington, D.C.
The company is bringing Cambria hotels to Austin, Texas; Detroit; and Nashville, Tennessee this year. Currently, Cambria has about 60 hotels across the country, with nearly 80 more in the pipeline.
New Haven was picked due to its proximity to Yale University, Yale New Haven medical facilities, Hammonasset Beach State Park and other Connecticut attractions, according to the company.
The new hotel will feature decor to reflect the region, including artwork from local artists. It will have meeting and event spaces, onsite dining and a fitness center among its amenities.
In spite of the negative impact of the pandemic, hoteliers are optimistic about the post-pandemic recovery and more tourism-related business in the months ahead.
The Cambria Hotel New Haven is being developed in collaboration with HighSide Development, architect and interior designer Baskervill, and construction manager KBE Building Corporation. The Pyramid Hotel Group will operate it.
