Corporate donors wanted as restaurant fund flooded with applications

Hurting restaurant owners flooded a new relief program with 435 applications on the first day it opened, Connecticut Restaurant Association Executive Director Scott Dolch said today.

Monday marked the first day that the CT Restaurant Relief Fund accepted applications online for $5,000 grants as part of pandemic aid. In the initial round, the fund will accept applications until Feb. 5. Restaurants can apply at ctrestaurantrelief.org.

“I don’t think I was expecting so many in less than 24 hours and obviously, we wish we could help everyone,” Dolch said. Of the 435 who applied on the first day, 193 applications were fully completed.

Delivery app DoorDash donated $500,000 to get the fund started, but Dolch said he hoped that other companies would step up to help the ailing restaurant industry, which has lost at least 600 businesses to closure since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With additional donations, Dolch said he hopes to open up the fund to caterers and private event venues.

“Our goal is to try and increase the fund through other private donations, so we can provide even more grants to so many local businesses,” Dolch said. “We look forward to growing the fund with additional corporate partners.”
