CT hospitals selected for clinical research

A nonprofit cancer research organization with dozens of clinical trials currently enrolling patients has approved two Connecticut hospitals to participate as clinical research sites.

Danbury Hospital and Norwalk Hospital recently received approval to join NRG Oncology as primary clinical research sites, which means patients at both facilities will have expanded access to new clinical trials addressing various cancers. The two hospitals will participate in breast cancer, radiation oncology and gynecologic cancer studies and treatments, the parties said.

Both hospitals are part of the rebranded Nuvance Health following a merger between Western Connecticut Health Network and New York-based Health Quest Systems.

The recognition from NRG Oncology adds to the two gynecologic cancer clinical trials the hospitals recently debuted. Those trials are focused on offering patients new drug options to treat epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, primary peritoneal and recurrent ovarian cancers.

Nuvance in an announcement Wednesday said NRG’s approval shows that both hospitals are qualified to participate in cancer research on an international level.

“NRG Oncology is a very important organization so it means a lot to be recognized for our cancer research capabilities,” said Dr. Margo Shoup, chair of the cancer service line for Nuvance Health. 

“As members of NRG Oncology, our clinicians and researchers will be able to engage with oncology leaders from around the world to further expand their knowledge and then apply advancements to our cancer patients, here at home,” she continued.

I would suggest people NOT enroll in these studies as Western Connecticut Health will probably send you a bill for services, and if you do not pay, WAIT, they will then pursue you in Small Claims court if under $5,000.
