CT Lemon Law Program sees record number of cases in 2019

Connecticut’s Department of Consumer Protection said 2019 has already been a record-breaking year for the number of Lemon Law Program cases it’s processed, and expects to surpass last year’s record for the amount of money recovered.

As of the beginning of November, DCP has processed 93 cases in which customers who bought cars sought a refund per the state’s Lemon Law, which establishes an owner’s automotive-warranty rights. Last year it processed 81 cases for the whole year.

“I’m pleased to see that more people in Connecticut are aware that this program can be a resource,” said DCP Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull. “The Lemon Law Program is designed to be easily accessible to all consumers in our state.”

A DCP spokeswoman said that while the department doesn’t yet have figures on how much money was recovered this year, it’s currently more than $2 million, and she expects that to grow to more than the $2.6 million recovered in 2018, a record at the time.

Connecticut’s Lemon Law first allowed consumers to go to court in 1983, and the measure was expanded in 1985 to allow arbitration as it exists today at DCP.
