Connecticut Public has obtained a $3.1 million state grant to renovate its headquarters at 1049 Asylum Ave., which is home to Connecticut Public Television and Connecticut Public Radio, also known as WNPR.

The money will go toward the organization’s Public Square Project, an effort to create a community hub for Connecticut Public to share with the local community.

“We know storytelling has the power to break down barriers, unite people and build community,” said Mark G. Contreras, president and CEO of Connecticut Public. “We see the positive economic impacts this hub can have on Hartford and the community through high-quality, inclusive and accessible activities, content, programs and resources aimed at strengthening our communities.”

The Public Square Project includes renovations to the ground floor of the building to build a multipurpose hub “to empower individual, commercial and community growth,” according to an announcement from Connecticut Public.

The project also involves developing a community meeting space with a capacity of 125 people, a 200-seat theater with convertible space, a black box studio recording space, a kitchen and up to 20,000 square feet of office rental space.

Connecticut Public said it garnered feedback from residents, community organizations and businesses as it developed the project.

Connecticut Public is a nonprofit organization with a $22 million annual budget. It has 101 employees and provides office space to four small businesses and nonprofits at its Hartford headquarters.
