CT unemployment claims topped 33K last week

Connecticut took in 33,182 initial claims for unemployment benefits during the week ended March 28, up from 25,100 in the prior week.

That’s according to the U.S. Department of Labor, which issued a state-by-state breakdown on Thursday.

Nationwide, initial claims totaled 6.6 million last week, up from 3.3 million the week prior.

The new federal data provides more insight into the economic impact of COVID-19 in Connecticut, as the state stopped issuing daily updates late last month.

After Gov. Ned Lamont declared a public health emergency on March 10, state labor administrators began to see claims spike the following weekend, when they received about 8,000.

The state DOL, which had provided daily updates, stopped doing so around March 25, citing concerns about stock market speculators, according to CT News Junkie.
