Connecticut lost 1,600 jobs in November, which was the state’s first month with a net decline since the first peak of COVID-19 back in April.
Connecticut’s unemployment rate now stands at 8.2%, up from 6.1% in October and from 3.8% a year ago, the state Department of Labor said Thursday.
However, DOL believes the actual rate is between 9% to 10%, down from its estimate of 11% in October.
The November losses, coupled with a downward revision to October’s job gains (from 14,100 to 11,500), means Connecticut is down a net 96,500 jobs (or 5.7%) from a year ago.
Private employers shed 700 net jobs during November while the government supersector (including federal, state local jobs, as well as those on tribal lands) shed 900 jobs.
“Federal government employment fell by 1,000 jobs as temporary Census work ended,” said Patrick Flaherty, acting director of DOL’s research office. “In addition, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in leisure and hospitality where accommodation and food service lost a portion of last month’s gains. Offsetting these declines, transportation and warehousing, which includes delivery services, grew in November and now employs more people than one year ago.”
