A new Dick’s Sporting Goods is scheduled to open in Waterbury next month and management is in the midst of a hiring blitz to get ready.
This week, a steady stream of applicants came into the sporting-goods retailer waiting to be interviewed for several open positions.
According to the company, it anticipates hiring five full-time and 35 part-time associate positions as well as 25 temporary positions for this new location.
The store, at 275 Union St. in the Brass Mill Center, is the former home of a Toys ‘R’ Us, which closed when the chain ceased operations.
The new store is expected to open in October, but the chain is not announcing the exact date at this time, according to Arielle Claypool, a senior associate at the New York-based public relations firm of Weber Shandwick, which is handling publicity for the store.
“The team is still looking for candidates to fill open positions at the store,” Claypool said.
As of Thursday, the interior had already been remodeled into the chain’s signature design, but it hadn’t yet been stocked with merchandise.
The Waterbury store will feature athletic and outdoor apparel, footwear, gear for team sports, and equipment for an array of activities, such as football, baseball, golf and fitness.
The chain is planning to host a three-day weekend of grand opening festivities, to include giveaways and special appearances, some time in October. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Dick's Sporting Goods has been in business since 1948. As of last month, the chain includes 727 stores around the country, including a dozen in Connecticut, including stores in Meriden, Milford and North Haven.
