Scooping up after your dog can be a hassle, and a Virginia-based business has spent the past two decades taking that duty (doody?) away from pet owners.

Now, DoodyCalls has expanded to southern and western Connecticut, with the launch of a West Haven-based franchise.

Jacob and Susan D'Aniello originally founded DoodyCalls back in 2000. Now based in Charlottesville, Va., it began franchising the pet waste removal business around the country in 2004. So far, it has expanded to 23 states.

Dave Harvey, who owns the New Milford-based pet boarding business Unleashed along with business partner Jasmine Cruz, decided to branch out with a DoodyCalls franchise.

The pair anticipates they will be able to leverage their current daycare client base for the new venture.

"We are thrilled to be a part of the DoodyCalls family,” Harvey said.

The local DoodyCalls business, which officially opened Dec 13, is serving both residential and commercial customers. Harvey saw a DoodyCalls truck and decided it would be a good fit for his pet-focused career.

The business helps residential dog owners by picking up dog waste, and providing spot treatment and deodorizing services. It also installs and maintains pet waste stations for communities and parks.

Jacob D'Aniello, COO and a founder of DoodyCalls, said the company is “excited” to have Harvey and his team help the business grow in Connecticut.

The local franchise will serve customers in several towns in southern and western parts of the state. In the New Haven region, that includes Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Cheshire, Derby, Hamden, Milford, Naugatuck, Orange, Seymour, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull, West Haven and Woodbridge.

Harvey said this week business is "going great," with the local franchise already cleaning yards in the region.

"We are animal people, and we can't wait to grow our list of clients and meet their fur family," he said.
