East Hartford's Planning and Zoning Commission will likely set zoning regulations for adult-use and hybrid marijuana businesses next month.
In a Wednesday night public hearing -- attended only by commissioners and a Hartford Business Journal reporter -- commissioners talked about possible concerns with traffic around dispensaries and public safety measures for delivery services, but didn't consider pausing sales.
Town Planner Jeffrey Cormier told commissioners he's talked to officials in a number of cities and towns, and thinks most of the municipalities pausing marijuana sales aren't planning on banning the industry for good.
"The sense I got from talking to planning professionals… is that a lot of towns are having a moratorium probably not because they're gonna ban it, but so they can see how other [municipalities] are going to regulate it," Cormier said.
During the meeting commissioners said they were not aware of an effort among residents to hold a referendum vote on allowing cannabis retailers. Connecticut's legalization statute says municipalities must hold a vote on whether to ban pot sales in town if 10% of the local electorate sign a petition for such a vote.
Under Connecticut's legalization statute, which uses population to specify how many marijuana businesses may operate per municipality, East Hartford may host as many as three retailers and three microcultivators.
