Avangrid Inc., the Orange-based energy supplier, and its philanthropic arm this week announced a $2 million commitment to help organizations supporting communities during the coronavirus pandemic.

The virus has been responsible for some 1,200 deaths in the United States, including 21 in Connecticut, as of Friday morning.

Avangrid is giving $1 million to support emergency needs across its service area.

Avangrid CEO James P. Torgerson, said the company “understands the need for rapid response and is no stranger to working on the frontline of a crisis.”

“We’re proud to offer a steady and helping hand to those who support the most vulnerable among us, particularly during these challenging times,” Torgerson said in an announcement. “We are determined to help address the pandemic’s economic, social and health ramifications. Our communities are in need, and we will stand by them.”

The non-profit Avangrid Foundation, of which Torgerson is president, has designated an incremental $1 million for crisis response. The foundation is Avangrid’s charitable arm, and the money will go toward partners across the country that are providing emergency response and community support.

Avangrid’s utility-supplier subsidiaries have announced that they will not shut off service for nonpayment during the crisis, and they are working with hospitals and other critical-care facilities to ensure service continuity. The Southern Connecticut Gas Co., Connecticut Natural Gas Co. and United Illuminating Co. are among Avangrid’s subsidiaries.
