ESPN creates home broadcast studio for Gov. Lamont

A temporary home studio in Gov. Ned Lamont's residence has become a familiar backdrop during the COVID-19 crisis thanks to Bristol sports media giant ESPN.

Lamont’s administration recently asked for ESPN’s technical know-how to create a studio in the historic Governor’s Residence on Prospect Avenue in Hartford, according to ESPN. The temporary studio is aimed at boosting visibility to Lamont’s regular updates on Connecticut’s response to the global pandemic via local and national cable news broadcasts.

Lamont, who is collaborating on a regional plan for the careful easing of COVID-19 restrictions, has been a frequent guest on CNN, MSNBC, WFSB and WTNH, among other networks, in recent weeks.

“We are fortunate to have some of the best engineers in the media world right here in Connecticut who are able to provide this kind of support,” Lamont said in a statement. “ESPN is a homegrown company providing a helping hand.”

More home studios have been popping up on ESPN’s airwaves as commentators work remotely during the coronavirus outbreak. Lamont’s office recently took notice of ESPN’s home-studio setups, the media company said.

ESPN said it tasked the same remote operations crew, which has been installing home studios for commentators including Mike Greenberg, Jeremy Schaap and Hannah Storm, to launch Lamont’s temporary studio.

Shea Byram, senior manager of ESPN’s remote operations, said her crew has established more than 40 new home studios since Connecticut’s first stay-at-home orders were issued last month.

“We know it’s a high priority for him to inform residents like us, and local and national news viewers, and he now has the ability to do that, from the safety of the Governor’s Residence,” Byram said. “It was wonderful to have a chance to support our local community’s needs in this unprecedented situation.”
