Fairfield U. nursing school lands $2.45M grant

Fairfield University’s Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies recently received a $2.45 million grant from the Connecticut Health Horizons initiative to help address the statewide shortage of nursing and behavioral health providers.

Connecticut Health Horizons is a three-year higher education program launched by Gov. Ned Lamont. 

The $35 million initiative, funded with federal American Rescue Plan Act money, is a collaborative partnership that includes Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, the Office of Workforce Strategy, multiple state agencies, the University of Connecticut, the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges and the Connecticut Hospital Association.

The goal of the program is to address the state’s healthcare workforce shortage through tuition assistance, recruitment and retention of faculty, and programs designed to promote partnerships between employers and colleges and universities to build career pathways.

Meredith Wallace Kazer, dean of the Egan School, said the nursing school is committed to addressing the workforce shortage by educating the next generation of nurses and behavioral health workers.

“We are beyond grateful to the state of Connecticut and our clinical partners at the Yale New Haven Health System, Stamford, and Griffin Hospitals for investing in the education of nursing and health professionals,” said Wallace Kazer. 

Tuition assistance will benefit Connecticut-based students enrolled in Fairfield’s bachelor of science in nursing, psychiatric nursing practitioner and masters in social work programs. Faculty recruitment and retention, and the launch of the Health Partners Scholars program will also be supported by the grant.
