Fairfield Univ. to monitor health via LiveSafe mobile app

With a goal of preventing COVID-19 infections on campus, Fairfield University is rolling out a daily health monitoring questionnaire through the LiveSafe smartphone application.

Classes at the Catholic university are scheduled to start on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Students, faculty and staff are being asked to use the app to monitor and report their daily health prior to arriving on campus.

Nicole Funaro, associate director of community and public relations, said the university is using the app to meet state requirements for daily COVID-19 health monitoring and symptom reporting.

“It is also part of Fairfield’s integrated approach to welcoming students, faculty and staff back to campus with expansive health and safety measures that meet and exceed state requirements,” Funaro said.

The university is also planning contact tracing, isolation and quarantining of symptomatic cases. Wearing face masks and practicing social distancing are also required, according to Funaro.

The free app includes a daily health monitoring questionnaire. If a user gets a green check, they are approved to attend class or work on campus, while a red “X” means they are asked to stay home or in their residence hall and seek medical care.

Todd Pelazza, director of public safety, said the goal is to make the required health monitoring easy and accessible.

“It’s a simple way to make sure our campus population can self-attest that they are feeling well and remaining symptom-free,” Pelazza said.

In March, the Arlington, Va.-based LiveSafe Inc. announced it was making a free, limited version of its app available to colleges, universities, businesses and healthcare institutions for communication related to the virus outbreak.
