The U.S. Attorney’s office has reached a settlement agreement with the Quality Inn Mystic-Groton in Stonington, after a guest with a service animal lodged a complaint alleging it violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, a male guest claimed that the hotel, which offers free breakfast, refused to allow him to enter the dining area with his service animal.

The law requires that places of public accommodation, including hotels, permit individuals with disabilities to use their service animals wherever guests are allowed to go.

Under the terms of the agreement, the hotel will provide the complainant with $1,000 in compensation.

Also, the hotel must allow service animals in the dining room during meals and anywhere the public and guests are allowed. Signs will be posted to notify guests that service animals are welcome. The hotel will implement a service animal policy and train all managers and employees to comply with it, according to the agreement.

While the U.S. Department of Justice has the option of pursuing litigation in cases involving violations of the ADA, U.S. Attorney John Durham indicated his office does not plan to do so in this case, citing the hotel’s owners’ cooperation.
