A Comfort Inn in Guilford is making several changes to be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), following a complaint lodged by a customer to federal authorities.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, it received an ADA complaint from an individual alleging that the hotel’s staff refused to allow him to stay there with his service animal. The man also alleged that the business wasn’t accessible to people who need to use wheelchairs.

U.S. Attorney John Durham indicated in a press release that hotel owners have been cooperative with federal investigators. His office reached a settlement agreement with the business without the need for litigation, according to Durham.

Under the terms of the agreement, the 300 Boston Post Road business is making several changes, including:

  • Implementing a new policy prohibiting staff members from requiring documentation or certification for service animals.
  • Training staff on its service animal policy and posting signs to indicate that service animals are welcome in all public areas.
  • Designating handicapped accessible parking spaces.
  • Creating an accessible route to the designated accessible entrance.
  • Adding accessible seating in the breakfast area.
  • Modifying lobby toilet rooms, and
  • Adding accessible features to designated guest rooms.

Federal law requires public accommodations such as hotels and inns to be accessible to individuals with disabilities. Under the ADA, the Justice Department investigates complaints and works to ensure compliance. In recent months, the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s office has reached agreements with several businesses around the state, including hotels, movie theaters, grocery stores and restaurants.

A message left for the hotel’s owners seeking comment on Tuesday was not immediately returned.
