Food trucks allowed to serve 4 CT rest areas during coronavirus pandemic

Food trucks are now permitted to operate at four Connecticut highway rest areas in an effort by the state to feed hungry truckers and other essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Ned Lamont late Friday signed the 25th executive order aimed at mitigating the spread of the novel coronavirus that lifts restrictions on commercial activity in highway rest areas.

The order calls for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) to open rest areas in Wallingford and Middletown on I-91, in Danbury on I-84 and North Stonington on I-95 for food truck sales.

Food truck operators interested in selling goods in those areas must obtain a permit from the DOT. An application and additional information can be found here.

The permits will be distributed after a recently suspended enforcement of federal prohibitions against the commercialization of rest areas nationwide, the DOT said.

"These truck drivers are keeping Connecticut moving and are providing critical necessities to and through our state during this national crisis. We need to make it as easy as possible to keep them fed around the clock," DOT Commissioner Joseph J. Giulietti said in a statement.

DOT maintains seven rest areas on Interstates 84, 91 and 95. They are open seven days a week at all hours.
