Frontier Communications of Norwalk ran the first successful trial of 25 gigabyte-per-second broadband in the U.S. and plans to deploy the technology in the second half of 2022, the company said Wednesday.

The trial utilized Nokia’s 25G Passive Optical Network (PON) broadband technology over fiber-optic cables, according to a statement. The 25G PON is 2.5 times faster than Frontier’s existing broadband.

The Nokia technology allows Frontier to use its current fiber-optic network to provide increased bandwidth because its existing broadband and the new 25G PON operate on different wavelengths. All of the services can use the same fiber, avoiding the capital expense of building a parallel network.

Nokia’s Quillion chip supports three generations of PON technology from a single platform, according to Frontier.

Frontier’s Chief Network Officer Veronica Bloodworth said, “Successfully completing the first U.S. trial of the country’s fastest fiber broadband is a critical step in offering a competitive advantage for Frontier and our customers.”

Frontier and Nokia will continue trials on Frontier’s existing network while planning for commercial deployment in the second half of 2022.
