Gas prices climbing for CT drivers

AAA

Gas prices are on the rise for Connecticut drivers, having gone up almost 20 cents since last week and nearly 30 cents in the last month, according to the AAA motor club.

The state average Wednesday was $3.71 per gallon, up from $3.53 per gallon last week, and $3.43 per gallon last month, AAA reported.

Hartford County recorded one of the lowest prices in Connecticut, averaging $3.69 per gallon, compared to $3.70 in New Haven County, and $3.77 in Fairfield County.

The rise is attributed to lackluster domestic demand for gas, paired with decreasing oil prices, which “led to the national average for a gallon of gas climbing just 4 cents to $3.67 since last week,” AAA reported.

Further, tensions running high over the past three weeks in the Middle East have caused the cost of oil to reach the upper $80s per barrel, but has since fallen several dollars into the low $80s, as the oil market watches to see if any further military actions occur, according to AAA.

“The situation overseas with war in both the Middle East and Ukraine has the oil market on edge,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “But this is also the time of year we may see a bit of a lull in gasoline demand between the end of spring breaks and ahead of Memorial Day. So the national average for gas may waffle a bit with small increases, some flat days, and even some price dips.”

As of Monday, the nationwide average was $3.66, up 4 cents from the week before and 14 cents from last month, AAA said.

California ranks highest in gas prices, at $5.43 per gallon, along with Hawaii, at $4.78. Connecticut ranks 14th for states with the highest average gas prices.

Connecticut’s highest average price was $4.98 per gallon, recorded on June 14, 2022.
