Hyperfine Inc., which makes a portable magnetic resonance imaging device called Swoop, recently received a $3.3 million grant, money which the Guilford-based company plans to use to expand its reach to impoverished nations.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gave the grant to Hyperfine. The funds are in addition to an initial $1.6 million grant provided by the foundation in 2020.
According to Hyperfine, this latest contribution will extend a global research program that is assessing the clinical feasibility of Swoop’s use in providing immediate point-of-care brain imaging to children aged 2 and under in developing countries.
Dr. Khan Siddiqui, chief medical officer at Hyperfine, said the original grant has already allowed the company to gather important research.
“We look forward to having an even greater impact with this investment as we continue expanding to new sites and geographies,” Siddiqui said, in an announcement.
According to Siddiqui, the latest funding expands the company’s ability to improve patients’ access to accurate and timely diagnosis and care.
The use of MRI technology can help with the diagnosis and management of a variety of ailments impacting children, such as asphyxia, sepsis, encephalitis, meningitis and other neurological diseases. The technology can also be used to monitor brain development, which can be negatively impacted when a child is malnourished. A total of 25 Swoop systems are being deployed across research and clinical study sites in Europe, Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, according to Hyperfine.
Dave Scott, president and CEO of Hyperfine, said, "By providing underserved communities with access to the care they need during the early critical stages of their lives, we hope to provide a brighter future for generations to come."
