Getting High on George Street

High George, the new rooftop open-air bar and restaurant atop downtown New Haven’s Blake Hotel, opens to the public Wednesday.

The brainchild of chef Tyler Anderson, the new three-season eatery at 9 High Street (at the intersection of George Street — hence its name) features a full food and beverage menu inspired by Summer in New England.

Opened to the media a week ago for a press preview, High George features dark wood accents contrasted with seasonal greens and plants, a marble bar top and seating for 80 guests at the bar, tables and banquettes. The rooftop’s glass roof is fully retractable, and heaters and blankets will be available during times of cooler temperatures. Anderson said he hopes to keep the restaurant open well into the autumn.

The menu is based on a small-plate concept characterized by fun twists on traditional New England faves such as lobster rolls and whole-belly clams, as well as meat and skewers from the restaurant’s coal-fired oven. High George also features a raw bar with fresh shellfish and seafood.

“I have wanted to be a part of the New Haven culinary scene since I moved to Connecticut 11 years ago,” Anderson said. “It’s such a diverse and vibrant city with great dining options that seem to get better every year.”

Opened in February, the 108-room boutique Blake Hotel was developed by Randy Salvatore, founder and CEO of RMS Companies in Stamford.

“Just six months into our opening, our occupancy and event booking numbers are exceeding our expectations, and with the addition of High George, we are confident that this space will draw additional interest from both hotel guests and those from the New Haven community and beyond,” Salvatore said.

High George is the work of chef Anderson in partnership with A.J. Aurrichio (the pair previously have joined forces to open Simbury’s award-winning Millwright’s) and Tim Cabral (of Chapel Street’s Ordinary watering hole, who oversees High George’s beverage program).

“We’ve had great success working together with Tyler, A.J. and Tim running the food and beverage operation at the Goodwin Hotel in Hartford, and I’m excited about the possibilities of working together in New Haven, especially with the opening of our new rooftop,” said Salvatore.

High George will be open 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
