Going green: Water Authority commits to renewable energy by year’s end

The New Haven region’s water supplier will be completely powered by green, renewable energy sources starting in late 2019.

The South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) announced this week it has signed a contract with Constellation Energy which will allow it to “go green” and have 100 percent of its energy supply come from renewable sources such as wind and solar power.

The RWA will buy renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Constellation. These certificates are produced to correspond with renewable energy production. By getting these certificates, the company can ensure any energy it uses is from renewable sources.

The four-year agreement begins in December. The Sargent Drive company’s energy costs are expected to remain at their current levels, according to Dan Doyle, an RWA spokesman.

The non-profit RWA supplies water to 430,000 customers across the region, and protects more than 27,000 acres of watershed. Lake Gaillard in North Branford is the authority’s largest reservoir.

Company officials indicated they are committed to being environmentally friendly, including by helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reducing RWA’s carbon footprint.

Larry Bingaman, RWA’s president and CEO. said the health of the environment is critical to the region’s water quality and the health of the company’s customers.

“We are proud to announce this next critical step in our transformation from a traditional water utility into a 21st-century environmental services company,” Bingaman said in an announcement.

Last month, the RWA issued its first “Green Bonds,” an opportunity for people who want to invest their money in environmentally friendly projects.
