Halda Therapeutics marks grand opening at Winchester Works

Biotech company Halda Therapeutics celebrated its new home at Winchester Works in New Haven Wednesday morning with a ribbon cutting ceremony and tours.

It is a homecoming of sorts for the drug discovery company. Craig Crews, a Yale University professor, originally founded the company, which was headquartered in Branford before moving to Winchester Works.

Halda signed a lease back in November to use 9,800 square feet of laboratory and office space in the building. The move gives Halda more room to expand its research capabilities and growth potential.

“We are very glad to be putting down our roots here,” Crews said Wednesday. “A thriving local biotech sector can transform a city, and I see the ingredients for success here.”

Halda’s new home, at 115 Munson St., has been renovated, and is located in the city’s Prospect Hill neighborhood, across from Yale’s Science Hill. 

Halda is occupying a portion of Winchester Works, which has roughly 145,000 square feet of space. The company is focused on discovering new treatments through the creation of molecules that modify disease-causing pathways.

Mayor Justin Elicker said city officials are excited to welcome Halda to New Haven.

“From Dr. Craig Crews through the entire team, there is a clear sense of a mission that speaks volumes about the strength of the bioscience hub here in New Haven.”

Dawn Hocevar, president and CEO of BioCT, welcomed Halda back to New Haven, and said she is looking forward to seeing it continue to expand. According to Hocevar, Halda is one of many companies helping the city become a biotech hub.

“How fitting that Halda should relocate to the site of a historic factory complex that was once a hub of manufacturing in its day,” Hocevar said.

Alex Twining, CEO of Twining Properties, owner of Winchester Works, said he is looking forward to more companies, along with residential and retail tenants, to follow Halda in moving in.

Winchester Works is the first stage of a larger Winchester Center development at the site of the former Winchester Arms factory. The plan envisions as many as 1,000 apartments, retail space, and 500,000 square feet of office and lab space.
