One of Hartford’s oldest and most venerated fine dining establishments has temporarily closed its doors.

Carbone’s Ristorante, on Franklin Ave., is not open for business, according to messages on its website and answering service.

The website explains that Carbone’s Ristorante is “currently closed,” and directs would-be customers to indoor dining, takeout and delivery options at two associated locations, Carbone’s Kitchen, in Bloomfield, and Carbone’s Prime in Rocky Hill. The message on the restaurant’s answering machine says Carbone’s Ristorante is “temporarily closed.”

Neither the website nor the phone message indicates why the 83-year-old eatery is no longer serving diners.

The restaurant’s management could not be immediately reached for comment.

Carbone’s Ristorante opened in 1938. It specializes in gourmet Italian fare.
