The upscale Hotel Marcel taking shape in the Pirelli building on Long Wharf is slated to open in April, and room reservations are already available for April dates, according to its website.
Developer Bruce Becker of Becker + Becker architects confirmed via email that the 165-room hotel is set to open in April.
The exterior of the landmark building, designed by Bauhaus star Marcel Breuer in the Brutalist style, was still ringed by tarps on Sunday, but the long-boarded windows appeared to be replaced with new glass. The building was long home to Armstrong Rubber Co., which was purchased by Pirelli in 1988 and closed soon after. It was vacant for decades.
The Hotel Marcel New Haven is part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, and rooms were available starting on April 25-26 on the Hilton website on Tuesday. Prices started at $172 per night for a room with a king-sized bed and ranged up to $467 for a one-bedroom suite with a view of New Haven Harbor.
Hilton’s site described the Marcel as “a fully sustainable, modern landmark,” touting its central location and green construction.
In addition to rooms, the hotel has 10,000 square feet of event space and eight meeting rooms. Covered parking and 12 electric-vehicle charging stations have been constructed at the site.
Becker + Becker broke ground at the 500 Sargent Dr. site in September 2020, announcing that the Marcel would be the first net-zero energy hotel in the country, drawing power from solar panels on the roof and a parking canopy array.
The Marcel is the latest entrant in a class of smaller, upscale hotels that have opened in New Haven in recent years including Graduate New Haven, The Blake, The Study at Yale and a planned Hilton Garden Inn and 130-room hotel on Route 34 near Yale New Haven Hospital.
