Shelton-headquartered electrical products manufacturer Hubbell Inc. will shutter its Newtown plant, laying off about 140 workers there, the company announced Tuesday.
Most of the work performed currently in Newtown will be moved to Hubbell’s facility in Puerto Rico, the company said.
The company also announced plans to close its Burndy Bethel plant, which employs 54 workers. Those layoffs are expected to take place in the second half of 2019.
After the two plant closings take effect Hubbell will employ about 650 workers in Connecticut, the company said.
Publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol HUBB, Hubbell reported worldwide revenues of $4.5 billion in 2018.
The company has operations in several states as well as in Puerto Rico, China, Mexico, Canada and Brazil.
