Hurlburt named state agriculture commissioner

Gov. Ned Lamont has nominated Bryan Hurlburt of Tolland to serve as commissioner of the state’s Department of Agriculture.

Hurlburt is currently executive director of the Connecticut Farm Bureau Association, the state’s largest and oldest agricultural organization. Before that he was senior vice president of program operations at Wholesome Wave, a Bridgeport nonprofit that seeks to make fresh food more affordable. In 2013, he was appointed Connecticut state executive director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency.

From 2007 to 2013, Hurlburt served four terms as state representative for the 53rd House district of Ashford, Tolland and Willington.

Hurlburt graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BS in business administration.

He will begin serving as commissioner-designate on March 29. His nomination will be sent to the General Assembly for its advice and consent.

Peter J. Secrist of Fairfield has been appointed vice president and senior portfolio manager at Halsey Associates in New Haven. Secrist joins Halsey Associates from Northern Trust, where he was senior vice president and senior portfolio manager for more than eight years.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University and holds an MBA in finance and investments from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado.

Founded in 1967, Halsey Associates is a division of Washington Trust Wealth Management, an SEC-registered investment adviser headquartered in New Haven. It manages approximately $946 million in assets.

Merrill Lynch Wealth Management announced that Senior Vice President and Wealth Management Advisor Richard Goodwin of Branford and Stowe, Vermont has been recognized on the 2019 Barron’s “Top 1,200 Financial Advisors” list, published March 11. This is the fourth time Goodwin has been recognized on the Barron’s “Top 1,200 Financial Advisors” list, which has been published since 2009. Goodwin has worked in Merrill’s Madison office for 28 years.
